The concern of a bus driver

- Jang, Geum Hee -

When I moved to Daegu four years ago being fresh from the country, bus used to keep striking a terror into my heart. Most bus drivers drove recklessly and I had to take hold of a handle of seat. One day, I overslept. I took a bus number 22 in expectation of being on time. If a bus over-speeds as usual, Im not going to be late.

I was, however, disappointed of my hope. Today of all days, the driver was driving, keeping within the speed limit. I was getting infuriated to think of usual over-speeding.

Maybe 10 minutes later? Now, the speed was turning so slow. It was much slower than a bicycle. Feeling choky, I made my way through the passengers to go to the fore part of the bus. The cars following the bus were honking their horns because it was the hour for going to work.

When I got to the fore part of the bus, I was startled. Ahead of the bus, an old man was going on a bicycle with a heavy load. It looked too much for him. Thats why the driver was driving so slow without honking the bus horn.

Maybe 5 minutes later? At horn of the cars behind the bus, the old man looked back for a second. Now, he realized the situation. Bowing his head, he moved his bicycle to the side. At last, increasing speed, the driver said to the passengers, Im sorry. Traffic is so heavy. He did not mention anything about the old man. The passengers at the back part of the bus made a complaint of the speed, but the passengers at the fore part who knew the scene, without a murmur.

Among people who cried, Hurry up! Quickly! the bus driver warmed my heart with his relaxed and careful concern. Although I couldnt be on time, I felt best on that day.
