There were a soldier and a novelist. Although the soldier
was living in a battlefield where nobody had foresight about
his/her life, his heart was warm all the time. The soldier
could maintain a well-balanced mind from novels of a woman
novelist. Before he took part in a battle, he read her books.
He could make determination he would be back alive through
her books. Whenever he accomplished his duty of the battle,
he exchanged letters with the woman writer. They evoked sympathy
of each other through letters.
After five years, the soldier was discharged from military
service. He really wanted to meet her, but she always refused
it. She never said anything about her appearance and even
age. She only said, "I look ugly, and you will be disappointed
with my appearance if you once see me." But he made constant
and earnest requests to her, she finally consented to meet
each other.
At the day of their appointment, he was waiting for her with
her novel in his hand. She was supposed to wear a red rose
to be noticed. Ten minutes earlier, the soldier arrived at
the station where they had decided to meet each other. While
waiting for her, he was quite distracted with imagination
about her, with a leap of his heart.
In ten minutes, there was coming a beautiful woman toward
him. 'There she comes,' thought he. But there was no rose
on her heart. She gave him a wink as if she would give him
permission to follow her. At the very moment, a woman was
following her, who seemed to be at the age of late forty.
She was short and stout, and everybody would notice that she
was a mother of two or three children. Soon, he found the
red rose on her heart. His mind was divided into two, considering
two women. He was attracted by the lady who had just went
passed whom he had been dreaming of. But now there was the
woman in front of him, waiting for him.
He, however, liked the woman writer who had been a support
of his life. He resolutely thrust the hesitation from himself,
and he stepped up to her. When he spoke to her, she said,
"Oh, a lady asked me to give you this red rose and let
you know she will be waiting for you at a coffee shop across
the street only if you talk to me." Then, the soldier
ran toward the coffee shop where his loved one would be waiting
for him.
