I did not get to sleep easily with an absurd question of
my friend. With a swollen face, a friend of mine called on
me late in the evening. She said she split up with her boyfriend.
After a good while of grieving, she abruptly asked me a question.
"What do you think a true love is? I have thought I know
what love is. But now that I'm suffering this kind of parting,
I know nothing about love at all." I could not say anything
with the unexpected question.
Next day morning, I went to the park to take exercise as usual.
There were so many people when considering the early morning.
Every person in the park looked beautiful, for they were opening
the day actively. But they seemed to bend all their energies
on their own businesses. Felt empty, I moved to another spot
to do sit-up.
While I was doing sit-up, I heard someone saying, "One,
two, three. Good. One more." It sounded ardent. I sprang
to my feet and looked around. At the moment, I was surprised
at the sight a little. There was an old couple at the opposite
site of mine. A fat-bellied woman was lying on her back, and
an old man was beside her. It was him who was counting numbers
feeling sorry for his wife. He helped her do sit-up by pulling
her by the sleeve once in a while.
I looked absentmindedly at the beautiful sight of them. The
question my friend had asked before the day came to my mind
at the very moment. Then it seemed that I could make an answer
to the question.
"My friend, what we call true love is to be with another
forever even when they are gray-headed and need false teeth
with age."
In that clear morning, I could find true love in the sight
of the old couple.
