Mose Mendelssohn, a grandfather of the prominent composer
Mendelssohn, was not handsome. He had a small frame, was gibbous.
One day, Mendelssohn visited a certain merchant in Hamburg
and learned his beautiful daughter named Promche.
He fell in hopeless love with at first sight.
But she turned her eyes away from him due to his ugly-looking
appearance.
He entered into the Promche¡¯s room with encourage before he
returned to the house.
He believed that it was the last time to talk with her.
She had a heavenly beauty, but he felt a deep sorrow due to
her indifference.
He tried to talk with her, but even she didn¡¯t listen to him
and answer.
Finally, he asked shyly.
¡°Do you believe that God determine your spouse?¡±
Promche answered by turning her head to the window coldly.
¡°Yes, then do you also believe that?¡±
¡°Yes, on the moment a man is born in the world, God decide
his spouse for him.
Even when I was born, my future bride was decided by God.
But God added. Your wife will be gibbous. I shouted to him.
No, God, please. It¡¯s tragedy having a woman be gibbous. Please
let me be gibbous and give her a beauty. That¡¯s why I was
born as a hunchback.¡±
The moment she heard it, she turned her head and stared at
him.
She seemed to come across a faint memory though his pure look.
She came to him and grasped his hand.
She became the devoted wife for him later.
