Lecture 3. Structure of homepage
Learning objective: To know the structure of homepage

Internet is made of homepages. Strictly speaking, it is not quite wrong to say, “Internet is homepage”, though there are many other services of Internet. In understanding Internet, you may feel at a loss in the course of searching information unless you make out the structure and language of homepage.

Let me take an example of a satellite broadcasting I watched yesterday.
Now you are curious about the height and weight of Park Chanho, and want to search Altavista (www.altavista.com) for the answer. How are you going to find it?
Aren’t you going around visiting homepages one by one, looking for the answer after you entered ‘Park Chanho’ in a search engine?
This could not be regarded as Internet information searching in a narrow sense, but if you are to do searching anyway, the procedure below is possible.

First, as the height and weight are contained in profile heading in most of the homepages, you should write “chanho park” And profile in keyword blank. You have not learned operator of “ ” and AND yet, but should know how to make a search in this way.
Now let us begin to learn about the structure of homepage.

First, push the side button to take a look at the homepage of Narea Construction Corporation, then you will see simple menus, like Company introduction, Company news, Business branch, Product information, Message board, and Link sites on the Home of the site.
Most of normal company sites are constructed according to this kind of format.

The following table will help you understand better.

The table above shows the general layout of which homepage of a company is generally composed, but not all the homepages follow this setting.
You can see, in the homepage of Narea Construction that we took a look at as an example, Loading turning up in the initial screen, and then some animations.
This initial screen is also called Intro, and most of the homepages with animation have initial screens fashioned by flash technology.

A company is able to show company’s symbol, product, or other advertisements on the initial screen by representing them as a sort of movie.
Main screen page is consisted of buttons that permit a move to other pages. Some homepages pop up new windows for Bulletin Board or News separately over the main screen, and others just include Bulletin Board in the main screen.
For your reference, please visit my homepage to see Bulletin Board built in on the main screen.

Main page is regarded most important in construction of a homepage. Special care should be taken of the wording and design of main page for overall graphic effect.

Buttons on the main screen are in most cases for Introduction, Greetings, About Us, etc. Please note the name for each button.
Company Introduction involves Greetings from C.E.O, Company History, Business Vision, or Business Branch.
Product Information and Product Order explain the name, specifications, and order sheet of product.
Data Room (PDS, BBS) has a collection of Windows or other computer related utilities. In case of private homepages, this Date Room may take a different name, that is, Portfolio, in which owner’s private works are to be stored.
Guest, Guest Room, or Q/A are similar to Bulletin Board in its format, where opinions or data are uploaded to be shared with visitors.

Site Link, Hot Site, or Link is where homepage maker gathered other useful sites for visitors to make a quick transfer to those homepages.
In order to master Internet in a short time, it might be a good way to click on Guest Room, Bulletin Board, or Chat Room, to experience Internet terminology and up-to-date program.

E-Mail is to send mails to company or homepage maker, usually clicked to open up Outlook Express, an exclusive mail program. This program is a little bit complex, requiring a special setting such as input of mail account and server.
Take a good note of addressee’s e-mail address displayed on the Outlook Express screen, and send an e-mail by Hanmail or Orgio or do setup for Outlook Express personally if you know the mail account.

We have learnt the simplest organization of a homepage. A homepage could be made up with more complex contents but I believe this lecture will help you understand other homepages too.

[To know the basic for Windows]

The first thing you should learn about computer is the unit used in computer.

Locate your mouse pointer on C drive of My Computer, and click on the right mouse button to open Registry and look at the capacity of your hard drive.
In case that the capacity of hard drive, for example, is 2.0G, you should know the real meaning of its capacity to control your computer.

Byte ? Kilobyte (Kb) ? Megabyte (Mb) ? Gigabyte (Gb)
Each upper unit is acquired by multiplying 1024 by the previous unit.
One single Hangeul document normally amounts to approximately 25Kb, so we could conclude that about one hundred thousand documents of same size would be stored in a hard drive of 2.5G.
Floppy diskettes currently on the market have a capacity of 1.4Mb.

Now that you have grasped some aspects of capacities of hard drive and file, let us get into the term Pentium III. Now look at the following vicissitude of computer CPU to get a glimpse on how far and to what level Pentium III has advanced.
386 SX, DX ℃ 486 SX, DX, DX2, DX4 ℃ Pentium 75Mhz, 100Mhz, 120Mhz, 133Mhz, 150Mhz, 166Mhz, 180Mhz ℃ Pentium MMX 200Mhz, 233Mhz, 266Mhz ℃ Pentium II 300Mhz, 350Mhz, 400Mhz ℃ Pentium III 450Mhz, 500Mhz, 550Mhz
The name of computer is decided according to the version of CPU.
